We’re reading two books this time. The Machine Stops by EM Forster describes a world in which people live in isolation in a 'cell', with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Perhaps we will emerge from lockdown similarly skeptical and fearful of first-hand experience. Click here for ebooks and an mp3.
Inspired by the Black Lives Matter impetus, we are also reading Ren Eddo-Lodge’s Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race. Click here for ebooks.

Next book is a summer read, Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield.
Goodreads says, “On a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger. In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them quite dark indeed.”

After a call from the wild M. Galvin, we’ve gone for a sci-fi read during lockdown. Excession by Iain M Banks is the fifth in his Culture series.
We’ve not (yet) decided when we’re meeting, though I think we know where we’ll be.
Electronic versions are in the vault, as are all his other books, including a few Iain Banks ones. Click here to open the download folder.
